Synopsis:

A princess longing to be free…

On the dawn of her courtship trials, Princess Lyana Aethionus knows she should be focused on winning her perfect mate, yet her thoughts wander to the open sky at the edge of her floating kingdom. One final adventure calls. Upon fleeing the palace, the last thing she expects to find is a raven prince locked in a death match with a dragon.

A bastard aching to belong…

Reviled son of a dead king, Rafe would do anything for his beloved half-brother, Prince Lysander Taetanus, including posing as him in the upcoming courtship trials. When a dragon interrupts their secret exchange, he orders his studious sibling to run. After suffering a fatal blow, Rafe is saved by a beautiful dove who possesses forbidden magic, just like him.

Fate brought them together, now destiny will tear them apart…

Unknown to the world above, on the foggy sea ten thousand feet below, a young king fights a forgotten war. He believes Lyana is the queen prophesied to save the world, and with the help of his favored spy, hidden deep in the highest ranks of the dove royal house, he will stop at nothing to have her.

Review:

I need the second book – immediately.

There is so much happening in this book and so many questions left to be answered, I can’t wait to see how it all ties together.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Lyana is the princess of the Doves and must choose a mate at the upcoming courtship trials.  She is curious, brave and adventurous, and sneaks out to see the arrival of the other houses.  While she is hiding, she witnesses a violent dragon attack on the house of Ravens.  Rafe, pretending to be his brother and rightful heir to the Raven throne, is nursed back to health by Ana (Lyana) using a forbidden magic they both share. From there, sparks fly!

The story is told from multiple perspectives and I didn’t find it to be overwhelming.  Each character is distinctly separate from the other.  I feel I learned the most from Cassie’s perspective, and felt the most from Rafe’s.

After discovering the Raven’s deception, Lyana begins preparations for her marriage to Lysander, yet continues to find herself drawn to Rafe.  I loved the chemistry between these two so much.  Their connection just felt genuine.  I also really enjoyed exploring Cassie and Lysander’s stories. There’s just so much interesting back story for these characters that was worth diving into.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this rambling, I’m just really excited to see what happens next. The ending gives a bit of resolution, but it was also a bit heartbreaking, and a touch confusing.
