The daughter of a star and a mortal, Sheetal is used to keeping secrets. Pretending to be “normal.” But when an accidental flare of her starfire puts her human father in the hospital, Sheetal needs a full star’s help to heal him. A star like her mother, who returned to the sky long ago.

Sheetal’s quest to save her father will take her to a celestial court of shining wonders and dark shadows, where she must take the stage as her family’s champion in a competition to decide the next ruling house of the heavens—and win, or risk never returning to Earth at all.

Review:

I read this book with my pal Kim (@novelhaus on Instagram) as part of our attempt to finish all of our backlogged Owlcrate books.  I feel like I have to point out how gorgeous the Owlcrate version is – the purple details just add extra wow to an already stunning cover.

Sheetal is pretending to be normal, but feels the call of the stars pulling more and more fiercely on her.  When the truth about her heritage starts to unfold, she must join the stars in a competition to win the cure to her fathers injury.  Sounds good, right?

Unfortunately, I found myself struggling to get through this book.  The writing seemed on the much younger side of young adult and the dialogue felt unrealistic.  I found the love interest boring and the competition was a bit confusing and seemed rushed.  There is so much build up to the competition and we only get a little bit of the actual event. While I wasn’t in love with this one, some of the descriptive sections were quite lovely and the underlying plot line was interesting.  I am always a sucker for the incorporation of music in books, and loved reading about the musical elements. If I had found this book when I was younger, I may have enjoyed it more.  As it stands now, I think I just wasn’t the right audience for this one, and that’s okay!  There are so many glowing reviews for Star Daughter, and you should definitely not let my opinion sway you.
