Synopsis:

The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel from New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman.

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town. Gillian and Sally have endured that fate as well: as children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape.

One will do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they share will bring them back—almost as if by magic…

Review:

I listened to this one on audio and I’m very glad I did. This is one of those stories I probably would have set down with every intention of picking it back up to finish, and then forgetting about it. The story was interesting, but there was just… not much dialogue. My pea-sized brain wouldn’t have been able to handle it in print.

This story felt very much like an exploration of character, and less about plot. I’m a plot driven gal, and this was a bit tough for me. I just felt myself not really caring what happened and hoping that they would get on with it. I’ve seen a lot of people say they actually prefer the movie to the book, which seems blasphemous, but I’m going to give the movie a try and see what happens.
