Synopsis:

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

Review:

We chose this one as our August Haley and Her Book Club Pick and I m so glad we did. It had been on my radar for a while, but like so many others, it was just chilling on my shelf waiting to be read. Book club gave me the motivation I needed to tackle this big ole book!

The characters in this book are delightful. Zélie is fierce, courageous, and on a mission to save magic. We also have the pleasure of being introduced to Princess Amari and Inan. Amari undergoes quite the transformation throughout the story and Inan.. keeps me guessing. I continually go back and forth on whether or not I like him.

Adeyemi does a fantastic job of building the world and creating drastic character growth. There always seems to be something continually driving our characters forward, and the story is packed with action. The only thing I didn’t love is the unnecessary (in my opinion) coupling of characters. I never like it when it feels as though everyone immediately has someone they are destined to fall in love with – it just seems unrealistic.

Otherwise, I really enjoyed this story and intend to continue on with the next book!
