Synopsis:

THREE BEST FRIENDS, A LAKE HOUSE, A SECRET TRIP — WHAT COULD GO WRONG?

It was supposed to be the perfect prom weekend getaway. But it’s clear something terrible happened when Claire wakes up alone and bloodied on a hiking trail with no memory of the past forty-eight hours.

Now everyone wants answers–most of all, Claire. She remembers Friday night, but after that . . . nothing. And now Kat and Jesse–her best friends–are missing.

What happened on the mountain? And where are Kat and Jesse? Claire knows the answers are buried somewhere in her memory. But as she’s learning, everyone has secrets–even her best friends. And she’s pretty sure she’s not going to like what she remembers.

Review:

Three friends go up the mountain – only one comes down.  I’ve been on a YA mystery/thriller kick lately, and this one might be my favorite!

Plot:

Claire can’t remember anything from the night her friends went missing on the mountain.  Throughout the story she is trying to piece together the events of that night in order to figure out what happened to her friends.  This book was nonstop action, nothing happens as you expect it to, and it’s impossible to put down.  You’ll be second guessing your assumptions until the very end.  The ending was a complete surprise, but it did have me wondering just how incompetent the adults were in this story – though I tend to think that with most YA thrillers.  How often do literal teenagers solve cases?

Characters:

You cannot trust a dang person in That Weekend.  Claire, the MC, can’t remember the events of the evening so all of her thoughts and ideas are loaded with doubts.  Despite her unreliable narration, she is fearless, persistent, and I found myself rooting for her to figure it out.  I didn’t get much of a sense of Kat’s character until later in the book, but I found it really difficult to like Jesse.

Overall:

That Weekend was a dazzling YA thriller that will keep you on your toes.  Unlimited twists and turns, compelling characters, and a mystery you won’t be able to quit, That Weekend is a YA thriller you need to have on your radar.
